melbourne writers festival – you must be 50 to attend

katy and I went to the melbourne writers festival on the weekend and had the pleasure of meeting Alice Pung, a young writer of chinese cambodian parentage.  her book, unpolished gem, is about growing up in footscray, the daughter of immigrants struggling to ‘make good’ after fleeing pol pot’s murderous regime in cambodia.  the athenauem library book club discussed her book earlier this year so we had a stack that we wanted to get signed (i know, im out of control now).

as we left the auditorium we noted that we were were the only other, not only asian, but young girls in the group who had come to hear her speak – most of the crowd were a good twenty years older than us.

where the fuck are all the ‘young’ (im being very generous to myself) readers?!!
