I’m excited about a couple of books coming out this year:
1. Tim Winton’s Breath – it’s about big wave surfers on the ‘wild, lonely coast of Western Australia’ [though i didn’t think that place existed anymore, there are bogans in every, even inhabitable, corner of WA].
2. Haruki Murakami’s What I Talk About When I Talk About Running. Murakami is a marathon runner, is there anything that he can not do? Speaking of marathons, a week or so ago – before I had even heard of this book – I decided that 2008 is the year of the marathon. That is, work less marathons and run more marathons. So Murakami is now the unofficial patron of the year of the marathon.
3. Paul Theroux’s Ghost Train to the Eastern Star: 28,000 Miles in Search of the Railway Bazaar . A train ride story.
Some other new ‘big name’ releases in 2008: Siri Hustvedt’s [chau that one is for you – but you probably know this already] newbook which comes out in April called The Sorrows of an American Woman and Salman Rushdie – The Enchantress of Florence.
